Die harmonikale Forschung, die an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien seit dem Jahr 1965 - damals noch Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst - fest verankert ist, gibt mit dem Konzept und der Organisation des Festival-Kongresses „SYMMETRY: ART &SCIENCE“ ein kräftiges Lebenszeichen von sich. Es ist gelungen, ForscherInnen und KünstlerInnen aus 30 Nationen zu einer Woche des interdisziplinären Austauschs zu versammeln, was für das Internationale Harmonik Zentrum eine besondere Leistung, aber auch eine große Herausforderung darstellt. Mit der Konzeption dieses Festival-Kongresses gelingt dem Harmonik-Zentrum etwas, das neuerdings unter dem oft noch inhaltsleeren Begriff „Art-based Research“ propagiert wird.
Das Harmonik-Zentrum hat sich stets der Vernetzung von Wissenschaft und Kunst gewidmet, dieses Denken international verbreitet und durch zahlreiche weithin ausstrahlende Projekte gelebt. Die enge Verknüpfung von künstlerischer Darbietung und reflektierendem Wissen stellt einen wesentlichen Teil des Selbstverständnisses aller Kunstuniversitäten Österreichs dar.
Als Rektor der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien erfüllt es mich mit Freude, dieses Ereignis, das die Präsentationsformen von Festival und Kongress verknüpft, als Kooperationspartner mittragen zu können. Den verantwortlichen Trägern dieser Geist, Seele und Gemüt sowie Kunst und Wissenschaft überspannenden Festtage - der Vereinigung ISIS, dem Internationalen Harmonik Zentrum und dem Pankratium Gmünd - wünsche ich überraschende Begegnungen, fruchtbare Präsentationen und belebende Dialoge in der Sym-Metrie, dem „Zusammengemessen-Sein“ von Wissenschaft und Kunst.

Von Isis zu Symmetria und Harmonia: 8. Festival-Kongress der International Society for the Interdisciplinary Study of Symmetry
Nomen est omen… Die Absicht für den langen offiziellen Namen der “Symmetry Society” war sehr einfach: das Akronym oder die abgekürzte Form sollten ebenfalls einen Sinn ergeben. Wir entschlossen uns zu einer Namensform, die zu ISIS (oder ISIS-Symmetry) führte, da doch die Gottheit Isis nicht nur mit antikem Lernen assoziiert werden kann, sondern auch mit verschiedenen Gebieten der Kunst und Wissenschaft, deren Schirmherrin sie war. ISIS ist aber auch ein Symbol internationaler Zusammenarbeit, denn sie reichte vom Alten Ägypten bis zur gesamten Griechisch-Römischen Welt, von der Arabischen Halbinsel bis nach Britannien. Interessanterweise wird der Fluss Thames in Oxford oftmals Isis genannt, mehr noch, dieser Name wurde früher für den ganzen Fluss gebraucht (ist das eine Referenz an Isis und/oder eine Vereinfachung des keltischen Namens Tamesis?). Eine weitere wichtige Verbindung für die Vereinigung ISIS ist das in Chicago edierte Journal Isis (1912 bis heute) auf dem Gebiet der Geschichte der Wissenschaften und ihrer kulturellen Einflüsse.
Weshalb Symmetrie? Vorrangiges Ziel der Vereinigung ist es, mehr Brücken (“Symmetrien” zwischen verschiedenen Gebieten von Kunst und Wissenschaft zu haben, mehr Kooperation
unter den Künstlern und Wissenschaftlern, was in einer Zeit der Überspezialisierung zunehmend nötig ist. Ich bestehe darauf, dass wir eine einzige Kultur haben sollten, nicht
zwei, wie Ch. P. Snow sie beschrieb. Um einen Ausdruck aus der Hirnforschung zu benützen, es ist wie eine “gespaltene Kultur” mit zwei Halbkugeln, und wir brauchen ganz besonders
eine Verbindung zwischen ihnen (wie beim corpus callosum des menschlichen Gehirns). Da der Ausdruck symmetria seit alter Zeit sowohl in der Kunst wie in der Wissenschaft gebraucht
wird, könnte er uns helfen, eine solche Verbindung oder gar eine gemeinsame Sprache zu haben. Das Konzept Symmetrie hat tatsächlich eine weit reichende Bedeutung:
- die antike Bedeutung von gemeinsamem Maß und Proportion,
- die modernen mathematischen, kristallographischen, physikalischen Symmetrien sowie die Idee der Invarianz,
- zudem eine Nähe zu Harmonie und strukturaler Schönheit in ästhetischer Bedeutung.
Wir können sagen, symmetria und harmonia sind wie Brüder oder Schwestern: der erste Begriff wird öfter in der visuellen Welt gebraucht, der zweite in der Musik. Symmetrie im Gegensatz zu Asymmetrie ist ein wichtiger Punkt, während die Idee der Dissymmetrie eine Synthese zwischen ihnen anbietet.
ISIS unternahm es, alle drei Jahre Kongresse und Ausstellungen zu organisieren, wo Künstler und Wissenschaftler, Studenten und Lehrer zusammentreffen können: (1) Budapest, 1989; (2) Hiroshima, 1992; (3) Washington, D.C., 1995; (4) Haifa, 1998; (5) Sydney, 2001; (6) Tihany am See Balaton, 2004; (7) Buenos Aires, 2007. Die Vereinigung hatte auch zwischen den Kongressen mehrere Veranstaltungen: Tsukuba Science City (1994 und 1999), Brüssel (2002), L'viv (2008) und Wrocław-Krakow (2009).
Obwohl diese eindrucksvolle Liste zeigt, dass ISIS verschiedene Regionen der Welt erreicht hat, sind wir doch zum ersten Mal in einem Deutsch sprechenden Land, speziell in der Künstlerstadt Gmünd. In Ergänzung dazu ist unser Gastgeber erstmals ein Professor für Musik: Werner Schulze, der Direktor des Internationalen Harmonik Zentrums an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien.
Die übliche Struktur unseres Programmablaufs fördert den Dialog zwischen den Disziplinen durch zahlreiche Plenar-Sitzungen. Angesichts der großen Anzahl an Vortragenden gibt es einige Parallel-Veranstaltungen, aber niemals mehr als zwei Sitzungen zur gleichen Zeit. Wir haben auch eine Tradition von abendlichen Aufführungen und Konzerten, aber Werner Schulze ist weit darüber hinausgegangen und hat unsere üblichen Kongress-Ausstellungen in einen Festival-Kongress verwandelt. Besonderer Dank an ihn, seine Kolleginnen und Kollegen und an die Organisationen, die unseren Event möglich gemacht haben: das Internationale Harmonik Zentrum in Wien, die Stadtgemeinde Gmünd und das Pankratium Gmünd.
Im Rahmen dieses Kongresses begehen wir auch die 150-Jahr-Feier des Todes des ungarischen Mathematikers János Bolyai, der die Nicht-Euklidische Revolution in der Geometrie vollführt und zahlreiche Fragen zur Kunst und Wissenschaft abgehandelt hat, von künstlichen Sprachen bis zur Zwölfton-Komposition. Da er in Wien studiert hat und später österreichische Gelehrte wesentlich zu seiner Anerkennung beigetragen haben (Karl Kreil und Johannes Frischauf), sind wir froh, diese Feier in Österreich zu haben. Erschaffen und erleben wir Symmetrie und Harmonie!

Sehr geschätzte, liebe Teilnehmer der Festtage „SYMMETRIE: KUNST &WISSENSCHAFT“!
Herzlich Willkommen in Österreichs Kultur- und Künstlerstadt Gmünd! Lieser und Malta heißen die beiden Flüsse, die hier zusammenfließen, ineinander münden (daher der Name Gmünd). Analog münden auch Kunst und Wissenschaft in eine neue Einheit. Jeder Fluss, jeder Denk- und Erlebnisfluss für sich allein ist wertvoll und erfreut uns - wie auch die Flüsse Lieser und Malta uns erfreuen und beleben -, doch es ist der Zusammenfluss beider Strömungen, der uns kräftigt zu neuer Stärke und Qualität.
Zusammenkommen, zusammenfließen: das schöne Sanskrit-Wort Sangeeth. Wie von selbst werden sich in Gmünd die beiden Formen Festival und Kongress zu einer neuen Form interdisziplinären und interkulturellen Zusammenseins vermählen in guter Ausgewogenheit von Kunst und Wissenschaft. Ein großer, international besetzter Reigen an Wissenschaftlern und Künstlern kommt in unserer Festwoche zusammen; er wird gleichsam Kinder zeugen: neue Ergebnisse und zukunftweisende Visionen.
Die International Society for the Interdisplinary Study of Symmetry und das Internationale Harmonik Zentrum an der Wiener Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst verantworten gemeinsam diese festlichen Kongress-Tage. ISIS, dieser „Club of Symmetry“, hat in den zwei Jahrzehnten seines Bestehens Erstaunliches geleistet. Im Mittelpunkt standen die im 3-Jahre-Rhythmus organisierten Kongresse, deren letzter 2007 in Buenos Aires stattgefunden hat; 2008 und 2009 folgten „Zwischen-Konferenzen“ in berühmten Städten der Österreichisch-Ungarischen Monarchie: L’viv (Ukraine), Wrocław und Krakow (Polen). Was lag nun, bei der Fortsetzung in Österreich, näher, als für den im 21. Jahr des Bestehens der Vereinigung ISIS-Symmetry durchgeführten 8. Weltkongress eine Festival-Fanfare „in Fibonacci Style“ zu komponieren (Zahlenfolge 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, ...): 13 Töne stammen vom Österreicher Werner Schulze, die anschließenden 21 Töne vom Ungarn Dávid Ottmár. In dieser „Österreichisch-Ungarischen Festfanfare“ werden nur jene 5 Töne verwendet, die auch im Namen Denes Nagy, dem Gründer, Präsidenten und treibenden Motor von ISIS, vorhanden sind: g, a, d, es, e.
Proportion, Symmetrie, Harmonie: Sehnsüchte des Geistes. Doch bei unserem Festival-Kongress soll es um mehr gehen als um die Reduktion des Menschen auf ein Denkwesen: Die Kultur- und Künstlerstadt Gmünd in ihrer Dichte und Überschaubarkeit lädt zu einer Konzentration auf die Ganzheit menschlichen Wesens, das Pankratium offenbart nicht eine Welt allein des Verstehens, sondern des Erfahrens, Staunens, der Fantasie, Überraschung, vielleicht des unerhofften Glücks.
“Kunst ohne Wissenschaft ist leer, Wissenschaft ohne Kunst ist blind”, um ein altbekanntes Wort abzuwandeln. Art meets Chemistry, Chemistry meets Botany, Botany Harmonics, Harmonics Skrjabin, Dance and Fire. Lebendiges Feuer, nicht das Bewahren von Asche, möge in jedem von uns brennen, wenn er Gmünd verlässt als eine neue, bereicherte Person. Wenn nur einer der Teilnehmer nach Hause fährt in der Überzeugung, dies war kein Kongress im altbekannten Sinn, sondern ein Fest, das unser Leben und Denken fundamental verändert hat, dann haben diese Tage in Gmünd ihren guten Sinn gehabt.
Genießen Sie also die verborgene und offenbare Harmonie der Stadt Gmünd, entdecken Sie überraschende Details, von denen es eine große Anzahl gibt. Die ganze Stadt ist Bühne unseres Festival-Kongresses!
